Medical Education Protest

The Nepal Medical Council opened an investigation into foreign doctors at medical colleges after finding suspicious or counterfeit registration documents. Officials suspect some colleges used them as ghost faculty to inflate MBBS seat numbers during inspections.

An article on Nepal’s medical education system called for expanding BSc Nursing and PCL Nursing programs in eligible 100-bed hospitals outside Kathmandu. It argued reforms, transparent fee structures, and tighter monitoring were needed to improve access and align training with health needs.

The Medical Education Struggle Campaign announced nationwide phased protests against corruption and irregularities in Nepal’s medical education and health sector. It opposed private medical colleges’ demands for higher seats and fees and said resident and intern doctors were facing delayed salaries and exploitation.

Private medical and dental college operators in Nepal said they would not provide living stipends to postgraduate and intern students. The association argued the obligation was added unilaterally without consultation and cited the colleges’ financial condition.

The Medical Education Commission approved a NPR 6.55 billion budget and program for fiscal year 2026/27. The government will fund NPR 5.99 billion, with NPR 560.4 million coming from internal revenues.
