Dashain Road Safety

Nepal Police said 1,339 road accidents during the Dashain festival period killed 124 people and injured 2,988 across the country. Motorcycle crashes were the most common, and Koshi Province had the most accidents while Madhesh Province had the fewest.

Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police took action against 470 vehicles in one day for violations including drunk driving, speeding and signal breaches. Officials said enforcement would continue throughout the Dashain festival period.

Kathmandu Valley recorded 105 road accidents and three deaths during Dashain, down from 155 accidents and 10 deaths last year. Police said advance preparation, tighter monitoring and coordination with transport stakeholders improved road safety.

Inbound traffic surged at Kathmandu Valley entry points as Dashain celebrants began returning to the capital. Police deployed additional personnel and intensified monitoring to manage congestion and reduce accidents.

More than 576,000 people had left the Kathmandu Valley for Dashain by October 20, traveling in 79,676 vehicles. Police increased personnel at major exit points to manage congestion and lower accident risk.

Nepal Police launched a special traffic safety plan across Karnali Province for the Dashain, Tihar and Chhath travel season. The plan targeted drunk driving, speeding, overloading and reckless driving, with extra patrols and passenger assistance desks at major travel points.
