Gen Z Uprising Anniversary

A year later, political leaders remained split over whether September 8 or September 9 should define the uprising, with one side emphasizing the state crackdown and the other the destruction and violence. Rights bodies and the inquiry commission had recommended investigations into both days, but the findings were still largely unimplemented.

Nepal marked its first Gen Z Martyrs’ Day as a public holiday, commemorating the 76 people killed in the 2025 protests. The day renewed calls to count the dead properly and ensure trials for those arrested during the movement.

Families of martyrs and injured protesters gathered in Kathmandu to mark the anniversary and accused the government of failing to deliver promised justice, medical treatment and support. They also criticized Prime Minister Balendra Shah for not attending the memorial.

Nepal Governance Watch Group called for the immediate release of investigation reports on the Gen Z movement, including the Karki-led commission report. It also urged action against those responsible for deaths, violence and arson during the protests.

A year after the Gen Z uprising, reports said key commitments on accountability, reform and rehabilitation remained unresolved, even as a new government, parliament dissolution, an election and a 10-point agreement had followed the protests. Immediate measures like martyr recognition, compensation and victim support were partly implemented, but deeper legal and institutional reforms were still pending.
